Trash Fashion

Design challenge

Welcome, Re-Fashionistas! The 2026 Design Challenge is now LIVE. Deadline to enter has been extended 3 days until Monday, Feb 2nd!

Info for Student Designers

  • THE CHALLENGE: Think of someone special in your life. Create something fashionable inspired by them: an accessory, or even a whole outfit! Use only repurposed, found, or secondhand-sourced materials in your design and for goodness sakes no adults plz.

  • Deadline to enter has been extended until Monday, February 2nd, 2026. Full contest rules and details are found in the link below.

  • The 2026 contest is open to all K-12 GCS students. Work alone or on a team.

  • Free materials for student designers are available at ReCraft all January at our special in-store display, including iron-on transfers — the 2026 featured material. Designs that use an iron-on will receive an extra point during judging.

  • All student designers who enter will receive free tickets to attend the Trash Fashion Show on Friday, Feb 13th hosted at The Children’s Museum of the Upstate. Students are encouraged to wear their entries. The whole museum will be open to enjoy during this special event!

  • 25 finalists will be invited to model their fashion during the official Trash Fashion Show, with 20 winning students/teams receiving cash prizes.

Tickets on sale now for just $10 until 2/6!

Info for the Public

  • The Trash Fashion Design Challenge is part of a grant awarded to ReCraft Creative Reuse Center by the South Carolina Arts Commission. The purpose of the publicly-funded project is to strengthen design thinking skills in public schools, reaching students with unique materials and innovative curriculum.

  • The community is invited to attend the Trash Fashion Show, a ticketed event held at TCMU on Friday, February 13th from 6-8 pm. The museum will be open only to event guests. Audience tickets are on sale now for $10 each ($20 after 2/6).

  • The event is free for families attending with their GCS student, or with a paper invitation sent to participating classrooms.

  • We encourage all attendees to wear shades of red and help transform TCMU into a living red carpet!

  • Due to funding requirements, this year’s official competition is not open to students at charter schools, private schools, or homeschools. However, free materials at ReCraft are available for any student designer to use. We highly encourage spin-off events for your school community!
